Kidney’s Function

The kidneys are best known for creating and clearing urine from our bodies. But did you know that they are also largely responsible for clearing the toxins in your body that the liver cannot, and serve an important role in maintaining your blood pressure. So remember to also thank your kidneys after next weekend’s outings.

Your kidneys are located in the middle of your back. The left one is slightly higher than the right one and is completely protected by your lower ribs while only half of your right kidney is covered by the ribs.

ANATOMY MONDAY: FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Ovaries

The ovaries are not directly connected to the fallopian tubes. Instead, the ovaries release an unfertilized egg into the female peritoneum and it then makes its journey down the fallopian tube to the uterus.

 

Uterus

During pregnancy, the uterus grows from the size of a pear to the size of a watermelon. By about 6 weeks after delivery, it will return back to its original size.

 

Cervix

The cervix is a protective barrier between your uterus and the outside world. Here, there is a “transition zone” in which the outer layer of cells begin to develop characteristics similar to those of skin cells and where the virus HPV likes to infect.

POSTURE HERO: LINCOLN CENTER

May is such a busy month! It’s National Posture Month AND it is Mother’s Day.

So, in honor of both of these things we have the most beautiful mother-to-be Posture Hero to share with you. I hope this will inspire you to protect your body by practicing power posture!

You can see she is using the chair. The chair is not supporting her, which is especially important while pregnant. She is sitting tall and her shoulders are back in a comfortable, strong positing.

 

Now, look at her head as she turns: her shoulders stay back and her chin is lifted. Lastly, she has her glass placed at an easily reachable position, so there is no need to tip or drop her strong positing to reach for a drink.

WEN NETWORKING BRUNCH AT THE YWCA BERGEN COUNTY

It is so nice to share my passion for fitness with other professional woman.

ANATOMY MONDAY: MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Men are known for their physical strength and endurance.

Machines like no other; reproduction is no exception.

The natural temperature of the human body is too warm for sperm to properly mature. The scrotum holds the testes slightly removed from the body so that a slightly cooler environment exists for this purpose.

DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is the more potent metabolite of testosterone. It is created by the enzyme 5(alpha)-reductase. Inhibiting this enzyme is a therapy for prostate cancer.

Did you know that testicular cancer more commonly occurs in younger males, while prostate cancer occurs more often in older males? Annual check ups save lives!

DESK STRETCHES TO STAY PRODUCTIVE, LIMBER, AND 丈夫 [Jōbu]

Your Jōbu- Stretch of the Summer.
These desk stretches are designed to be completed whenever you need a boost, 100% from your workspace- wherever that may be. 

 

Stretching is great for your body, and these desk stretches are like the old saying, “killing two birds with one stone.” How could you not add these to your day?! Follow the video and have a Jōbu-Day!

 

Few Tips:

  • Make sure you do both sides.
  • To get a deeper stretch hold each position for a count of 30.
  • DO NOT bounce while stretching; instead breathe into the stretch.
  • You may be stretching, but that doesn’t mean your can’t practice proper posture! Pull that belly in and work on that strong core.

 

You can use this stretch to:

  • Wake up your body.
  • Help focus your mind.
  • Reduce pain that comes from sitting all day.
  • Realign your body after sitting improperly.

 

Now you know all the benefits of stretching… GET MOVING!
